Mental Health and Wellbeing

Welcome to our Wellbeing page!

"Children's mental wellbeing is so vitally important. Happier children learn more and are much more likely to reach their potential" - @actionforhappiness

At Evercreech C of E Primary School, we aim to promote positive mental health and wellbeing for our whole school community (children, staff, parents and carers), and recognise how important mental health and emotional wellbeing is to our lives in just the same way as physical health. We recognise that children’s mental health is a crucial factor in their overall wellbeing and how it can impact on their learning and achievement.

We are a Mental Health Support Team (MHST) school which enables us to liaise with qualified mental health professionals and organisations to make sure that children, young people and their families receive timely help with their mental health and wellbeing when they need it. Referrals are coordinated by our Senior Mental Health Lead, who also uses the Somerset Wellbeing Framework to audit, monitor, plan and review our mental health and wellbeing provision.

Balance Bulletins

Each month we share The Balance Bulletin, our monthly communication focused on shining a spotlight on all things mental health and wellbeing. In each issue we share practical tips, useful information and advice, and resources to help foster a happy, healthy environment for families to grow and thrive, as well as updates about the wellbeing activities that are taking place in school. We also share updates on courses and workshops that might be of interest, giving parents/carers tools to support their family’s wellbeing journey.

Wellbeing Ambassadors - Happiness Heroes!

Mrs Chilcott and Mrs Patton are excited to be working with our Happiness Heroes to raise awareness of mental health and wellbeing across the school. Together we have identified a focused event each half term where we promote and celebrate wellbeing. So far they have helped us to mark Hello Yellow Day and Odd Socks Day - look out for their next key event which is Children's Mental Health Week in February!

Random Act of Kindness Challenge

We held a 'Blue and Red' day in memory of Oliver Jones and challenged children to complete a random act of kindness over the half term break; children were given a blue or red heart for an adult to write their act of kindness on and returned these to school where they were celebrated and then added to Oli's memory box.

Positive Noticing Day

In November we took part in a Positive Noticing Day where pupils (and staff!) were encouraged to positively notice one another by writing something positive about someone on a tag and then giving that tag to the person so they could wear it with pride! The school was awash with smiles as people received a boost to their self-esteem. The day had such a positive impact that we plan to make it a regular event to help support everyone's mental health and wellbeing - watch this space for the date of the next one....

Hello Yellow - Supporting World Mental Health Day

On Friday 11th October we wore yellow to school in support of Young Minds' celebration for World Mental Health Day. A spectrum of shades were seen, from gold to sunshine to mustard to neon, all with the aim of shining a light on the importance of mental health. Each class also took part in mindful activities throughout the day to develop strategies for a positive mindset, keeping calm and reducing anxiety.

Our School and the MHST

Evercreech Church of England Primary School is a Mental Health Support Team (MHST) school. This means we are committed to building a mentally healthy school environment helping all members of the school community to feel confident, resilient and independent around their mental wellbeing.

MHSTs were established nationally to improve children and young people’s early access to mental health and wellbeing services by providing support in schools. They work with children and young people experiencing mild to moderate mental health difficulties.

Within Somerset, the MHST is a jointly delivered service between Young Somerset and Somerset Foundation Trust CAMHS. It is also supported by Public Health England and the Education Psychology service. MHST staff work in collaboration with the Senior Mental Health Lead at Evercreech C of E Primary.

The three core functions of the MHST are:

  1. To provide evidence-based Low Intensity Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (LICBT) interventions for mild to moderate mental health and wellbeing needs to children and young people.
  2. To support the Mental Health Lead in each MHST school to introduce or develop a whole school approach to mental health and wellbeing.
  3. To give timely advice and signposting to schools, and to liaise with external agencies, ensuring that children and young people and their families receive the right support at the right time.

LICBT support may be face-to-face or virtual, may involve working with parents or in a group, and will typically involve an assessment and 6-8 weekly sessions. These interventions are highly structured and delivered by mental health practitioners, who receive regular supervision with clinical supervisors.
