Year 2’s Exciting Journey to Kenya!
This term, Year 2 have been exploring the vibrant and diverse country of Kenya through a range of creative and cross-curricular activities. The children have immersed themselves in African culture, geography, art, and wildlife, bringing learning to life in exciting and meaningful ways.
In art, the children created striking African sunset pictures, using paint and black silhouettes to capture the beauty of the savanna at dusk. They also used oil pastels to design colourful African-inspired art and crafted traditional Kenyan necklaces using bright colours and beads, celebrating the bold patterns and vibrant culture of the country.
Our young artists also worked with clay, carefully sculpting African animals such as elephants, lions, and giraffes, linking beautifully with their geography and science learning.
Through fact files, the children became researchers, gathering information about lions and other savanna animals. They explored Kenya's national parks and reserves, learning about the rich variety of wildlife and the importance of protecting these incredible habitats.
In geography, we learned about the Maasai tribe—their traditional way of life, clothing, and customs. The children had great fun trying the famous Maasai jumping dance, which brought a lot of smiles and energy to our classroom!
This topic has not only helped build understanding of a different country and culture but also inspired curiosity and creativity. The children have developed a real appreciation for Kenya’s landscapes, people, and animals—and had lots of fun along the way!
Our work was also proudly displayed at the Bath and West Show.
