Microhabitats

Year 2 have been learning all about microhabitats and the tiny creatures that live in them. As part of their science work, the children explored how different environments provide the right conditions for various minibeasts to survive.

They had an exciting time heading outside to search for real-life examples of microhabitats around the school grounds. They looked under logs, in leaf piles, and among the bushes to find creatures like woodlice, worms, ants, and spiders.

The children thought carefully about what each creature needs to live, such as damp, dark, or sheltered spaces, and discussed how these small habitats help protect minibeasts and provide them with food and shelter.

Back in the classroom, we used the data we collected to create a bar chart, showing how many of each minibeast we found. This helped us compare the different microhabitats and understand which ones were most popular.

It was a brilliant hands-on learning experience that helped bring science and maths to life, encouraging curiosity, observation, and data handling skills.
