  • Nurses

This term, Year 2 have been learning about three important women in history: Florence Nightingale, Mary Seacole, and Edith Cavell. We found out how each of these nurses helped care for soldiers during times of war and how they helped change hospitals for the better.

We learned that Florence Nightingale worked in the Crimean War and was known as "The Lady with the Lamp" because she checked on the soldiers at night. Mary Seacole travelled from Jamaica and set up her own place to care for wounded soldiers. Edith Cavell was a nurse in World War I who helped both sides and was very brave.

To help us understand their work, we took part in some role play. We became nurses for the day, using bandages to care for our "patients" and acting out hospital scenes. We learned how to be gentle, kind, and helpful—just like the nurses from the past.

This topic helped us think about kindness, bravery, and why caring for others is so important. The children really enjoyed bringing history to life through drama and storytelling.
