The children have been practising their running, jumping, and throwing skills – showing fantastic energy, effort, and teamwork!
Well done, Year 1 – we can’t wait to see you in action on Sports Day!
This week, we have been reading Lucy and Tom at the Seaside. The children really enjoyed the story and used some fantastic adjectives to describe their favourite ice creams – they sounded delicious! We explored our senses to write a setting description of the seaside, thinking carefully about what we could see, hear, smell, taste, and feel. The children also thought about all the things they would need to pack in a beach bag for a day at the seaside.
We talked about how to stay safe in the sun, and finished the week with a reading comprehension activity all about seaside adventures. Fantastic work, Cherry Class!
We had great fun making Father’s Day cards for Father’s Sunday! The children began by decorating ties with their dad’s favourite things, then carefully cut them out and stuck them onto card. We shaped the cards to look like shirt collars and added a pocket square. Each child also wrote a lovely message to make their card extra special.
Some children chose to make their cards for grandfathers too, which made them even more thoughtful and personal.
They looked fantastic – well done, Year 1!
Cherry Class began their new topic on mechanisms, focusing on wheels and axles. The children explored how different shaped wheels move and decided circular wheels worked best. They carefully cut out cardboard wheels, attached them to axles and a base, then added string to test if their models could be pulled along. A fun, hands-on session full of creativity and discovery!
We started our new Science topic: Animals Including Humans. This week, we had great fun learning all about fish. We found out that fish have gills to help them breathe instead of lungs. They use their fins and tails to swim through the water. Fish can live in ponds, lakes, and the salty sea. We also learnt that fish are cold-blooded and lay lots of soft eggs. The children were very excited to learn these fascinating facts!
In PSHE, we worked in pairs to learn about the parts inside our bodies. One child lay down on a large sheet of paper while the other carefully drew around their body. Then, we worked together to label the important internal body parts—not just the arms and legs, but the organs that help keep us alive and healthy. We learnt the names of some major internal organs and what they do.
This week in PE, the children had great fun improving their hand-eye coordination with throwing and catching games. The children then practised rallying with rackets, working in pairs to keep the ball moving. Lots of smiles, focus, and fantastic teamwork!
This week in art, Cherry Class had a wonderful time exploring the magic of mixing paint! We started by discovering how blue and yellow combine to create green, but the real fun began when we experimented with different amounts of each colour to create a variety of shades. From soft, light greens to deep, rich tones, we learnt how small changes in colour can make a big difference.
To bring our learning to life, we painted the fingers of a hand in different shades of green, while choosing just the right tone for the palm. It was amazing to see how the subtle changes in colour made each hand unique.
In Geography, we’ve been learning all about symbols and why they are used on maps. The children had a lovely time creating their very own beach maps, complete with a key to explain what each symbol represented. It was a fun and creative way to explore map reading.
We were very lucky to welcome Manni’s mum into our classroom this week, along with some adorable ducklings! The children were thrilled to have the chance to gently stroke the ducklings and asked some brilliant questions about what they ate and how they are cared for.
As part of Mental Health Awareness, we learnt what mental health is and explored the different ways we can take care of it — such as getting enough sleep, eating well, and exercising regularly. We talked about how mental health is just as important as physical health, and that it’s okay to ask for help, just like we would go to the doctor if we were feeling unwell. We also discussed the different communities we belong to, such as our school, Cherry Class, our families, and clubs like football, judo, swimming, and gymnastics. The children then enjoyed drawing four of the communities that meant the most to them.
We were very lucky to have a police officer visit our class to talk to us about her important role in keeping people safe. She explained how we can contact the police if we ever need help and showed us some of the different equipment they use, including handcuffs, a radio, and a protective vest. The children were fascinated and asked some brilliant questions—it was a memorable and informative visit!
This week in Science, Year 1 have been closely observing the sunflowers we planted two weeks ago. It’s been so exciting to see how much they’ve changed!
Our sunflowers now have two bright green shoots and a strong stem measuring 7.5 cm tall. We talked about what has helped them grow so well. The children explained that we’ve been watering them regularly and making sure they are kept in a warm, sunny spot to get plenty of sunlight. We also wrote some lovely descriptions of the changes we’ve noticed. It’s been a fantastic way to explore how plants grow and what they need to stay healthy.
We explored primary colours—red, blue, and yellow—and discovered how to mix them to create secondary colours like orange, green, and purple. Using LEGO bricks, we had lots of fun printing and experimenting with colour mixing to see the magic happen!
This week, we had lots of fun learning tennis skills! We started by learning the chopper grip to hold the racket correctly. Then we practised bouncing the ball up and down on our rackets to build control. Finally, we worked with a partner to gently rally the ball back and forth, focusing on accuracy and teamwork.
We’ve been exploring capacity! In pairs, we estimated how many cubes it would take to fill different containers. Then, we tested our predictions by measuring the actual capacity. It was a fun and hands-on way to learn about volume and estimation!
To commemorate VE Day, Cherry Class took part in a special reading comprehension activity where they learnr all about the significance of Victory in Europe Day and why it is remembered. The children showed great focus and understanding as they answered questions and discussed what life might have been like at the end of World War II.
Following this, we got into the spirit of celebration by making colourful flags to decorate our classroom for the school’s VE Day event. The children were enthusiastic, creative, and worked brilliantly together.
Well done, Cherry Class — a thoughtful and festive tribute to an important day in history!
We were very lucky to have a special visitor join us in Cherry Class! Ben came in to deliver a fun and engaging cricket session, where we focused on fielding drills and the basics of throwing and catching.
We learnt how important it is to keep our eyes on the ball and how to work as a team by passing the ball to our teammates. Everyone showed great enthusiasm and effort throughout the session.
We finished with a competitive game of fielding, and it was wonderful to see such fantastic teamwork and sportsmanship. Well done, Cherry Class!
This week in Geography, Cherry Class have been exploring the exciting attractions of the seaside, with a special focus on the town of Weymouth. To bring the beach to life in the classroom, we used real sand and pebbles, so the children could experience what the seaside feels like. We discussed popular seaside attractions, such as watching boats in the harbour, visiting the Sea Life Centre, and seeing the amazing sand sculptures at SandWorld — which we are very excited to visit on our school trip in July!
The children then used their imaginations and new knowledge to write about what people do at the seaside. Their ideas included eating fish and chips (but being careful of those cheeky seagulls!), swimming and surfing in the sea, relaxing on deckchairs, and building sandcastles on the beach.
This term in Science, Year 1 have been learning all about plants. We were very lucky to have a special visitor, Clare, who came in to help us pot sunflower seeds. The children loved getting hands-on with the planting and learning about what plants need to grow: water, sunlight, air, time, and a suitable temperature.
We also explored the different parts of a plant and what each part does. The children were especially fascinated to learn how leaves use sunlight to make energy in a process called photosynthesis.
In Maths, Year 1 have been learning all about division by exploring how to share objects into equal groups. The children have been introduced to the division symbol (÷) and have enjoyed using sharing circles to help them divide numbers fairly.
They’ve done a fantastic job understanding that division is all about making things equal, and it’s been great to see their confidence grow with each lesson!
This week, KS1 had a special visit to learn all about road safety. Our visitor spoke to the children about the importance of staying safe near roads and how to cross the road safely.
The children learnt the key steps: Stop, Look, Listen, and Think before crossing. It was a fun and informative session that helped everyone remember how to stay safe when out and about!
Cherry Class have made a brilliant start to their new RE topic: Judaism! The children have been busy exploring key Jewish symbols and learning about their meanings. So far, they’ve discovered the Torah (a special scroll containing Jewish teachings), the Menorah (a candleholder used during Hanukkah), the Star of David (a well-known symbol of Judaism), and the kippah (a small cap worn during prayer and worship).
They also learnt about the synagogue, a Jewish place of worship, and found out about the important role of the rabbi, who leads prayers and helps teach the Jewish community.
It’s been a wonderful start to the topic, and the children have shown fantastic curiosity and respect while learning about different faiths and cultures. Well done, Cherry Class!
In Geography this week, Cherry Class have started their exciting new topic all about the seaside! The children had a brilliant time learning about the different features you can find at the seaside, such as the beach, cliffs, and pier. They labelled these features on a diagram, which helped them understand what makes the seaside such a fun and interesting place. We also had great discussions about all the fun things people do when they visit — from building sandcastles to paddling in the sea!
To finish, the children used their creativity to make their own seaside scenes, complete with everything they would expect to see. Unsurprisingly, the ice-cream van was a big favourite!
In Science, we have been learning all about the structure of a plant. The children enjoyed labelling a diagram of a sunflower, identifying parts like the roots, stem, leaves, and flower. They also had fun sequencing the steps of planting a sunflower — first putting soil in a pot, then adding a seed, watering it, and finally placing it on a warm, sunny windowsill to watch it grow!
To finish the term, the children had a fantastic time on an Easter egg hunt, searching high and low for eggs. As a special treat, each child received a delicious chocolate bunny to enjoy!
Cherry class had a fantastic time making chocolate Easter eggs! We began by talking about bossy words, also known as imperative verbs, which are used to give instructions. Then, we broke up the chocolate into small pieces so it would melt easily, and crushed the shredded wheat to mix into the melted chocolate. Everyone took turns stirring the mixture, and then we used our hands to shape it into little nests in cupcake cases. The final touch was adding mini eggs to our nests. The best part? Eating them, of course!
We had so much fun creating Easter-themed tulip art! The children started by painting the sky, using a sponge to gently dab on varying shades of blue and white to create a soft, cloudy effect. Next, they carefully painted the spoons: green for the stems, and vibrant orange and yellow for the leaves. To complete their masterpieces, the children cut out green leaves and carefully assembled their tulips.
Huge congratulations to Tilly, Theo, and Azaria for their performance at the Easter Church Service as part of Recorder Club.
This week in PSHE, we’ve been learning all about the importance of a good night’s sleep! Did you know that a 5-year-old needs about 11 hours of sleep each night? We discovered how sleep helps us grow strong and healthy. We also talked about what makes a great bedtime routine. Our favourite part was chatting about cuddling our special toy and reading a bedtime story. After that, we worked together to put the steps of our bedtime routine in the right order.
Year 1 Cherry Class had a wonderful time creating Mother’s Day cards for their amazing mothers. They wrote a special message inside, carefully cut out a flower pot, and placed it at the bottom of the card. The children then used their hands to create a green plant, adding little flowers and petals with their fingertips. It was a special way to show love and appreciation!
Cherry Class had a fantastic time creating beautiful primroses for our special Mother's Day display!
Cherry Class took part in a fun experiment to see which material would best protect an egg when dropped. We tried bubble wrap, cotton wool, toilet paper, and paper towels. After wrapping our eggs, we dropped them – and the bubble-wrapped egg stayed safe, while the others cracked!
Great job, Cherry Class – you’re all egg-cellent scientists! 👏🥚
A special well done to our amazing artists in Cherry Class – Manni, Lilian, Tilly, and Dotty – for their beautiful drawings and labelling of the Three Little Pigs' houses.
In Cherry Class, we’ve been learning how important it is to eat lots of fruit and vegetables to stay healthy. We found out that we should try to eat at least five portions of fruit and veggies every day!
To make it even more fun, we created silly fruit faces and then ate them afterwards.
This week in Year 1, Cherry Class had a fantastic time launching their very own Rocket Mice! 🚀As part of this exciting activity, students used a plastic bottle launcher to shoot rockets high into the air by rapidly squashing the bottle. The children had lots of fun experimenting and discussing the science behind the launch. They were curious about how different factors might affect their rocket's flight, from the pressure in the bottle to the angle at which they launched it. It was a fun and hands-on way to explore the wonders of science!
In our PSHE lesson, we learnt about germs and how easily they can spread. To demonstrate this, we used glitter to represent the germs. The children high-fived each other, showing how quickly germs can transfer from person to person. We also discussed ways to prevent this, such as sneezing or coughing into your elbow, washing your hands with soap and water, and making sure to sing 'Happy Birthday' twice to ensure you wash your hands for long enough!
We had an exciting opportunity to step inside the Explorer Dome and embark on a fascinating journey into the world of light! During our adventure, we discovered different types of light and the intriguing ways shadows form. We also learnt about the sun, a massive ball of gas, and explored the mysteries of the stars that light up our night sky.
In PE this week, we had a fantastic time focusing on teamwork! We worked together as a class to complete a fun challenge: getting a hoop around the circle without letting go of each other’s hands. Everyone had to help one another, and it was amazing to see how much we could accomplish when we worked as a team!
In Art this week, we’ve been exploring plaiting, threading, and knotting techniques. We learnt that it’s important to keep trying if something doesn’t work the first time. The children had three different colours of thread tied together and taped to the table. They then watched a video with step-by-step instructions on how to plait.

This week in Science, Cherry Class went on a fun Welly Walk to explore different plants and trees. The children enjoyed looking for different types of trees and learning about the difference between evergreen and deciduous trees. They found out how these trees change with the seasons. After their walk, the class collected leaves and made beautiful leaf prints, showing off the unique shapes and patterns of the leaves.
In our recent RE lesson, we have been exploring the meaning and significance of Christingle in Christianity. The Christingle, a beautiful and powerful symbol, teaches us about the light of Jesus and how we are connected in faith.
We wrote in our books about the deeper meaning behind each part of the Christingle:
The Candle represents the light of Jesus, shining brightly in the world.
The Orange symbolises the Earth, reminding us of God's creation and our responsibility to care for it.
The Ribbon stands for the blood of Jesus, a powerful symbol of his love and sacrifice.
The Four Sweets represent the four corners of the Earth and the four seasons, highlighting the global reach of God's love and the cycle of life.
Through our learning, we have gained a deeper understanding of how these symbols come together to reflect the core values of Christianity.
Cherry Class has been having a fantastic time exploring Jack and the Beanstalk in English! First, we wrote a character description of the giant, using exciting adjectives like colossal to bring him to life. Then, we sequenced the story and broke it down into the beginning, middle, and end. Afterwards, we retold the fairy tale in our own words.
In Design and Technology, we kicked off a new topic on mechanisms. We explored side-to-side sliders and used them to create moving pictures. The children began by cutting out a car and attaching it to a lollipop stick. Next, they carefully coloured it in. Finally, they inserted the slider into the slit they created and enjoyed moving their cars along the street. It was a fun and creative way to learn about mechanisms!
