    Our Planet

    Transitions

We will be talking about how we grow and starting to prepare the older children for their transition to ‘big’ school. We will be practicing independence and looking at how to build confidence and how to be a good friend. We will be concentrating on having ideas, expressing these thoughts and ideas and working as a democracy to respect the feeling and ideas of others. The older children will be talking and reading about how to manage conflicts they may have  and how to find solutions.

Hedgehogs will start to follow rules without reminding.

Hedgehogs will start to learn to control their feelings of anger or frustration in confrontational situations

Squirrels will start to have empathy with others emotions and see things from another’s perspective.

They will have confidence, independence and self reliance in feelings and actions, showing confidence and resilience in what they do and achieve.

In maths Hedgehogs will start to recognise numbers of personal significance. They will begin learning the 5 principles of counting: stable order, correspondence, cardinality, abstraction, and order irrelevance. They will begin to recognise 2D shapes and use formal names for them.

    Squirrels will be looking at:

    Time

Comparing capacity – full, empty, half full

Measuring and comparing size – big, bigger, biggest, small, smaller, smallest

Measuring and comparing length – short, tall, long

    Reviewing 2D and 3D shapes

    Comparing amounts

We will talk about shapes and patterns they have used , including some 3D shapes, in construction.

We will encourage the children to create their own ABAB patterns and possibly extend this independently.

In literacy, some of the younger children will start to show a preference for a dominant hand.

Some children will start to give meanings to their marks.

Some children will be able to copy letters from their names or write their names independently.

Squirrels will respond to pictures and words, recognising some letters, their names, and other words or symbols of personal significance.

Squirrels will start to ‘write’ independently – shopping list etc, in play

They will learn to clap out simple syllables in names and songs.

Hedgehogs will be becoming more confident in play using their improving gross motor skills to build, create and play.

They will be starting to manage simple tasks such as putting on their coat, washing their hands, independently.

Squirrels will be starting to master zips and buttons and be able to change their shoes or clothes when necessary, ready for showing more independence as they move up to school.

We will be taking part I Sports Day in June, and continuing with our yoga sessions every other week. The Leavers will have their celebration at the end of term and Tulip Photography will be here later in the term as well.
