    Summer Term 1

    Our themes this term are:

    Growing Up

Our Favourite Authors – this term it’s Julia Donaldson

    Superheroes

    People Who Help Us

    The Emergency Services

    Transport

We will be talking about how we grow and starting to prepare the older children for their transition to ‘big’ school. We will be practicing independence and looking at how to build confidence and how to be a good friend. We will be concentrating on having ideas, expressing these thoughts and ideas and working as a democracy to respect the feeling and ideas of others. The older children will be talking and reading about how to manage conflicts they may have  and how to find solutions.

We will choose our favourite books together, and talk about plots and characters, and discuss why we like the stories and pictures so much.

We will discuss the superheroes in our lives, not just the ones we see on the television, and think about why we respect them and look up to them.

This leads on to people who help us in the community and the emergency services. We will look at all the different people who have an impact on our lives, what to do min an emergency, and how to call for the emergency services.

We will finish the term looking at transport, from trains and planes, to cars and boats, and everything in between!

In maths Hedgehogs will continue looking at size, weight and length, and will start to order objects according to different parameters. They will look at pattern and continuing simple patterns and then combine shapes to try and make new ones.

Squirrels’ will look at positional language, counting and sorting small groups and comparing them, looking at one more and one less and how this might affect the groups, and at finding the corresponding numerals to mark their groups.  They will be exploring ABAB patterns and sequences and extending them, and will start to recognize 3D shapes.

In literacy, as well as looking at our favourite authors, Hedgehogs will be looking at books in small groups and responding to pictures and the story, starting to discuss what is happening and what may come next.

They will start to draw connecting lines and circles and should be showing a preference for a dominant hand.

Squirrels will be reinforcing their knowledge of stories and books, looking at how they are written and read – from top to bottom, left to right.

They will be encouraged to make up their own simple stories which they can draw pictures for, ask an adult to write down for them, and even try acting them out.

We will be encouraging the children to manage their own risks when playing with large equipment, climbing, and riding the bikes. We will look at how we transport materials and tools and how to use tools safely. The children will be encouraged to work together to plan and build simple structures, such as a balance trail or den.
